7 Best Tracking Habit Apps in 2023

"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." - Jim Rohn

Many want to start and make new habits in the new year. I am definitely in that group. But did you know it takes about 90 days to make something a habit? That is a lot longer than I would have thought. To help keep me motivated throughout those three months and give me visual cues, I have found tracking immensely helpful. Here are the seven best habit-tracking apps in 2023.

What Are the Best Habit Tracking Apps in 2023

  1. Habitify

  2. Fabulous

  3. Habitica

  4. Notion

  5. Streaks

  6. Quitzilla

  7. Coach.me

Habitify

Habitify Homepage

Overview

Habitify is my favorite of the seven habit tracker apps listed here. It is available on Android, iPhone, and the web to access anywhere. I feel like I can plan my day the way I want to with this app. The downside is it does require a subscription fee.

Top Features

  • Clean Interface

  • Loads of graphs to see your results and improvements

  • Data Driven

  • Set time goals for your habits

  • Set reminders

  • Write notes for each habit

Pricing

Habitify is free to download, but you pay $4.99/month for the premium membership. There is also a Lifetime Premium Membership for a flat fee of $64.99 and a one-year membership for $27.99.

My Take

If you love graphs and a straightforward interface, this is your app. No fluff and loads of options, and if you are willing to pay the price, Habitify is your habit tracker app.

Fabulous

Fabulous Home Page

Overview

I love this name! Fun and helps you feel great. It is fun to open an app with the name Fabulous, and then you see how well you are doing on your habits, and it just makes you feel good. The app is colorful, adding to the fun factor. The downside is it is only compatible with an iPhone or iPod.

Top Features

  • Has coaching and mental health options - not just habits

  • Fun, colorful interface

  • More of a self-care app, so it includes a lot of options

  • The app breaks down habit-building into small steps. You build onto these steps over several days to hit your habit.

  • You can customize your routines and add multiple habits with the paid membership.

Pricing

Journeys are the habits the app has already preloaded. It is free to download,d and the journeys are free. If you want to change or customize your routine, you must pay for the memberships. There is a 7-day free trial; after that, it is $3.33 a month, billed yearly at $39.99.

My Take

I love the colors and interface - so much fun, but not very customizable for the free version. Since I love having it all - this would not be my first choice, but if you need to start slow and don't know where to start, this would be my pick.

Habitica

Habitica Home page

Overview

If you love games, then Habitica is your app. As you check off and improve your habits, you get points toward your game character. Then if you fail to check off a habit, your character will lose points and even take damage, thus losing some of its abilities. Consequences, but it can be motivating to get your habits done and checked off.

Top Features

  • Video games inside the app

  • If you join a party in the game, then your motivation to get your habits done is even greater. Otherwise, you suffer damage not just to your character but to all the characters in the party.

  • Available for both Android and iPhone

  • The core functionality is free

Pricing

The core functionality of this habit tracker app is free, and if you want to upgrade to the premium version it is $4.99 a month.

My Take

If you are into video games and you want a little extra outside push, then Habitica is the app for you. Total fun factor.

Notion

Overview

Complete honesty here, I love Notion, but I have not used it for tracking habits. It makes so much sense that Notion could do this very easily. Notion, to me, is like the digital bullet journal. There are tons of options to create different types of pages, and many of them already have free templates that you have to plug in and start typing. You can always create your own, too, if you have the desire.

Top Features

  • Completely free unless you buy an outside customized template

  • Create different pages for different needs. You can have a whole page dedicated to your habit, and it can be in the same notebook as your home and/or work pages where your to-do list an,d project management tools live too.

  • The options are infinite

  • Works on desktop or mobile

  • Some templates have an additional note section for any reflections you might have.

Pricing

Notion is completely free, but if you decide to add another family member to share the template or if you use a certain amount of data, then it is a paid subscription.

My Take

If you are looking for no fluff and ease of use, then Notion is the best habit tracker app for you. I would also say if you are already using Notion for other things such as work or home, then use it for your habit tracking - you will have everything in one place, which simplifies life just a little bit more, and can't we all use that?

Streaks

Overview

Streaks is a beautiful app that gives you the motivation to complete your habits each day. If you complete it, your streak continues, if you don't, then it resets back to zero. This app does integrate with Apple Health so that you can add in your steps, runs, etc. It is only available on Apple devices though.

Top Features

  • Log not only habits, but also fitness

  • Integrates with Apple Health

  • You can create or choose up to 24 habits/tasks to log.

  • Apple Design Award Winner

Pricing

The Streaks app costs $4.99.

My Take

If you have an iPhone or Mac and love loads of options, then this is the best habit tracker app for you. It is beautiful, and if you want to learn more about your health, the integration with Apple Health makes it a slam dunk!

Quitzilla

Quitzilla Home Page

Overview

Quitzilla helps you stop "bad" habits or addictions, like smoking, drinking, etc. It is available on either the iPhone or Android.

Top Features

  • Clean Interface

  • Easy to use

  • Take screenshots to save

  • Set your own milestones

  • Gives rewards to help with motivation

Pricing

The Quitzilla cost is $4.99 a month.

My Take

If you are wanting to kick that addiction, then this app could be a game changer for you. Stopping a habit or addiction is hard! Resources are the key to making real change. This app is just one of many resources out there that can help you take those first steps and continue your progress.

Coach.me

Coach.me Home Page

Overview

Coach.me is the app for you if you want personalized coaching to help you start and or keep up your habit. It is also for professional coaches who necessitate tools and training to build a successful clientele. Coach.me is available on iPhone, Android, and the Web.

Top Features

  • Set Reminders

  • Get support when you hit your milestones in the community.

  • Track your progress and trends

  • Receive step-by-step plans from professionals to help you, if you want

Pricing

Coach.me is free to use. If you decided to use their professional coaches, then that is $25 or more a week.

My Take

Sometimes it can be hard to know where to start. Having the option on a free app to get access to professional coaches sounds like a big win. The free app and the support of coaches when needed will definitely set you up for success in reaching your goals in no time.

What is a Habit Tracking App

A habit tracking app is an app on your phone or tablet that helps you to reach your goals and build good habits or break other ones. Most have a daily check-off to give you visual cues that you are making progress. Studies show that this is the number one way people make progress on their habits - seeing their progress.

A note about an app versus a journal. There are pros and cons to both, but really it comes down to you. Do you prefer to write things down, and is your journal with you most times? Honestly, I love bullet journals and checking things off a list, but my journal is not always with me, and I don't always have the time or patience to write or create the structure in a journal.

But on a phone or tablet, whether we like it or not, our devices are with us all the time. The device itself or the app of your choice will already have the structure in place to check off your goals.

Wrap Up

Creating habits takes steady progress and time. Using one of these apps will help you become the best version of yourself. Being patient and graceful with yourself as you start this journey helps immensely too.
